    Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy '98

May I draw your attention to RIS98 which is a bi-annual international
conference on laser resonance ionization with particular emphasis on
applications and development.  This year it is to be held in June at
the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology,
Manchester, England.  Although it may not be a conference you would
normally consider attending, laser resonance ionization has been
successfully used for ultra-trace element detection and isotopic
analysis in many areas of Earth and planetary sciences, for example
dating ground waters in aquifers by measuring the abundance of
cosmogenic nuclides or measuring the isotopic ratios of xenon in
microgram samples of extra-terrestrial materials to name but two.  We
are planning a session on geological applications and Professor
Grenville Turner of Earth Sciences at Manchester will be the keynote
