Dear Bruce,
Here is my response to your querries regarding UPS systems on mass
spectrometers and other electronic equipment. I have a MAPL215-50 noble
gas mass spectrometer for He, Ne, Ar measurements. I usually experience
up to 20 power outages per year and have purchased a number of UPS
systems for my mass spec and other beta-counting equipment. I have found
them invaluable. In particular, for my mass spec, I use a BEST UPS
system (4.3 to 18 KVA with external bypass switch - 208/240 VAC input
and 120/208 or 120/240 VAC output). I have had power outages of up to
several hours to my building and my UPS keeps my mass spec running just
fine. In addition the unit will condition the power coming in during
routine power supply which gets me away from any annoying line voltage
spikes. Cost of this unit when I bought it 5 years ago was on the order
of $5000, however it has been worth every penny of it.
