PhD Scholarships
Atmospheric chemistry, spectroscopy and radiation
For the isotopically inclined, see area 1 and visit our web site!
The Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group at the University of Wollongong has
funding for up to three PhD scholarships, to begin in 2001. Our research in
atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric radiation and FTIR spectroscopy includes
studies of the emissions of greenhouse gases from agriculture, detection of
global atmospheric change, infrared remote sensing of atmospheric
composition and atmospheric infrared radiation. We collaborate strongly
with the CSIRO Divisions of Atmospheric Research and Land and Water, and the
Cape Grim Baseline Atmospheric Station in Tasmania operated by the Bureau of
Meteorology.
Positions are available in three areas:
1. Measurements of greenhouse gases, their source strengths and isotopic
composition from important sources such as industry and agriculture, and in
clean air. This work involves development novel infrared spectroscopy-based
techniques.
2. Remote sensing of atmospheric composition by high-resolution solar
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. This work is linked to an
international network of such stations studying long-term changes in the
atmosphere, the Network for Detection of Stratospheric Change.
3. Atmospheric infrared radiation. A new project to develop and use a
mobile medium resolution FTIR spectrometer for studies including absolute
radiometry, remote sensing of atmospheric pollution, and emissions of trace
gases from volcanoes.
The research areas will suit people with a background in chemical physics,
physical chemistry or physics.
