Postdoctoral position available
at the University of Vermont, College of Medicine
to develop continuous flow gas chromatography-pyrolysis-isotope ratio mass
spectrometry (GC-P-IRMS)
for biomedical applications using stable isotopically labeled tracers
The position is a one-year position with the opportunity to apply for
funding for additional years.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with both a
Europa 20-20 configured for pyrolysis and measurement of 2H, 15N, 13C and
18O and a Finnigan DeltaPlus configured for combustion and measurement of
15N, 13C, and 18O. Other GCMS and LCMS instruments are also available in
the group (see http://www.uvm.edu/~dmatthew/instruments.html for details of
the instrumentation).
The purpose of the work is to develop new and novel techniques using
pyrolysis to measure stable isotope enrichments at low levels using
GC-P-IRMS for tracer studies in humans. Although the work will include
working with a multi-disciplinary group performing clinical investigation
in human metabolism, direct experience in the biomedical sciences is not
required. Rather, the position will make available opportunities for the
postdoctoral fellow to learn biomedical sciences and the application of
stable isotopically labeled tracers for studying human physiology,
metabolism and nutrition.
Experience in mass spectrometry and/or with continuous-flow IRMS is
required. Experience writing software or programming for scientific
instruments is highly desirable. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree is required,
but the area of degree study is not as important as the experience with
mass spectrometry.
Information about the research group and program can be found at the web
site below.
