PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

announces the 1997 competition for the

HARRY HESS FELLOWS

An Honorific Postdoctoral Fellowship program named for Harry Hess has been
established to provide opportunities for outstanding geoscientists to work
in the field of their choice.  Research may be carried out independently or
in collaboration with members of the Geosciences Department.  The Fellowships
provide an annual stipend along with an allowance for research support.  The
Fellowships are awarded for one year with a nominal starting date in September
of 1997.  Extensions for an additional year are possible.  Applicants will also
be considered for other available postdoctoral  positions in the Department.
Current areas of research include:

                * Geochemistry                          * Petrology
                * Biogeochemical Cycles         								* Structural Geology
                * Paleontology                          * Solid-Earth Geophysic
              	 * Mineralogy                          	 * Seismology

Candidates should send a letter of application and the supporting materials
listed below to the HESS FELLOWS COMMITTEE, c/o Professor George Philander,
Department of Geosciences, Princeton University, 113 Guyot Hall, Princeton,
NJ 08544.  FAX# 609-258-1274  Applications must be received no later than
January 31, 1997.

        2.  List of publications and preprints
								3.  Brief statement of research interests and goals      
								4.  Names and addresses of three referees familiar with the
     							candidate's work (the candidate should arrange to have
     							the letters of recommendation sent directly to the address
     							above).
