Dear friends,
It is with great sorrow that I am informing the isotopic community of the
loss of one of it's founding members. Cesare Emiliani passed away yesterday
afternoon, July 20, from complications associated with a heart attack in
his retirement home in West Palm Beach, FL. He is survived by his son,
daughter and wife, Rosita. Cesare's definitive work revolutionized our
thinking about ice ages. He was also instrumental in the development of the
subdiscipline of paleoceanography and what came to be known as the Deep Sea
Drilling Project. He received degrees from Bologna and Chicago as well as
many other honors and awards. His quick wit and wonderful sense of humour
brought a smile, if not a belly laugh, to many of us. He was a brilliant
academician, researcher, teacher, mentor and friend. I know I will miss him
very much.
