I have been involved in the use of radiogenic Sr and Pb isotopes, together
with O and H isotopes (by other colleagues) and hydrochemistry for various
urban pollution source assessment problems in South Africa. Whilst the main
area of study has been related to acid mine drainage (quite a problem in
South Africa because of old coal and gold mining activities), we have also
tackled a number of solid waste disposal sites and other types of industrial
pollution where the standard techniques have not been able to unambiguously
fingerprint the source of pollution.

In some cases we have only been able to distinguish between different sources
of pollution but in others we have been able to use the isotopes for
quantitative source apportionment i.e. to attribute specific percentage
contribution to multiple sources in an area.

doing because the main emphasis has been commercial. I hope to write up some
aspects of the AMD work which has been funded by our Water Research
Commission though once it is completed.
