UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ
Marine Organic Biogeochemistry/Chemical Oceanography
Assistant Professor
The Ocean Sciences Department of the University of California, Santa Cruz
(UCSC) continues expansion of its programs and invites applications for a
tenure-track position at the assistant professor level effective Fall 2000.
We are interested in candidates in the following two areas.
We are interested in a marine organic biogeochemist/chemical oceanographer
who studies organic compounds in the ocean and/or marine sediments.
Research interests could range from investigating specific classes of
organic compounds in the modern water column to investigating how the
signals of modern oceanographic processes are incorporated in the marine
sedimentary record. This person should have strong analytical chemistry
capabilities using novel analytical techniques and approaches to address
questions in marine organic biogeochemistry of global significance, as well
as breadth in the understanding of ocean biogeochemistry.
RANK: Assistant Professor, Step I to Step III
SALARY: $44,300 - $49,400 (9-month basis), depending on qualifications and
experience
Successful candidates will be expected to develop vigorous research
programs including the supervision of graduate students. Our program
emphasizes collaborative, interdisciplinary interactions with fellow
department colleagues and with faculty in other science departments on
campus. In addition, there is the potential for candidates to develop
strong, complementary research ties with neighboring oceanographic
institutions in the Monterey Bay region, such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Research Institute (MBARI) and the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS).
Successful candidates should have the desire and capability to teach
regularly at all levels within the University, including general interest
courses for lower division undergraduates, more specialized courses
appropriate for upper-division undergraduates, and graduate courses in
their areas of expertise.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. (or equivalent) in oceanography or related
discipline preferred by June 30, 2000 (must be in hand no later than June
30, 2001), demonstrated potential for excellence as a researcher, and
commitment to and talent for teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels.
POSITIONS AVAILABLE: Fall Quarter 2000, contingent upon availability of
funding.
APPLY TO: Send full curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, a
statement of teaching interests, and the names and addresses (including
phone number, fax number, and e-mail address) of four referees to:

WATER AND SURFACE PROCESSES
Assistant Professor
The Earth Sciences Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz,
invites applications for a tenure-track position in Water and Surface
Processes at the Assistant Professor level, starting in Fall 2000.
We seek applicants from across a range of subdisciplines such as hydrology,
limnology, glaciology or geochemistry, who investigate topics such as the
physical and/or chemical dynamics of surface water systems, weathering
processes, or solute and sediment transport. We are particularly interested
in candidates with a strong quantitative background in Earth Sciences, who
apply innovative field, laboratory, and/or computational methods to the
resolution of fundamental problems involving water and the dynamics of
Earth's surface. The successful candidate will complement a diverse faculty
of 20, and will participate in the newly-formed Center for the
Dynamics/Evolution of the Land-Sea Interface at UCSC. We seek candidates
who would benefit from, and contribute to, areas of strength in the
department, including geomorphology, aquatic toxicology, climate modeling,
groundwater hydrogeology, coastal processes, isotope geochemistry,
paleoclimatology and paleoecology. The Earth Sciences Department provides
access to outstanding analytical facilities and technical support, attracts
excellent graduate students, and is home to more than 100 undergraduate
majors. The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and
graduate levels, will develop a vigorous research program supported by
external funding, and will supervise student research. For additional
information please see the departmental website: www.es.ucsc.edu.
