4th Canadian Continuous-Flow Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry Workshop
SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT April 30, 1997
Host: Environmental Isotope Laboratory, Department of Earth Sciences
University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
When: August 25-27, 1997
Cost: $100 (CDN), which includes local transportation from the hotel,
refreshments, lunches and a formal banquet
**********************************************************************
***Purpose
With the rapidly expanding availability of front end sample
preparation systems (i.e. elemental analysers (EA), autosamplers (MG),
gas chromatography/combustion (GC-C)) and, the emergence of
Continuous Flow Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry with precisions
approaching conventional dual-inlet mass spectrometry for a variety of
sample materials, CF-IRMS may now be considered a main stream tool for
researchers. With its very rapid, multi-isotope capability requiring
very small sample quantities, low costs and ease of use, CF-IRMS has
become a cross-disciplinary tool available through direct purchase or
by submission to various contract labs.
This workshop is geared to those wishing to hear about this evolving
technology in a "nuts and bolts" type discussion. Sample selection and
preparation, problem solving, front end configurations, capabilities
and applications are some of the topics that will arise. Focus is on
the technology and the applications and without delving to deeply into
the interpretation.
***Highlites
A question and answer session will be arranged at the hotel on the
Tuesday evening where questions anyone might have can be discused in
an open forum. Some one will act as convener to allow everyone to have
a chance to pose their problems. If you wish to submit questions
beforehand, we will attempt to circulate them to those we feel best
able to answer them and have them bring their solution/answer to that
session.
A half day "beginner" session on the Sunday afternoon to introduce the
neophyte to the technology. We expect all the manufacturers to make
short presentations followed by a quick tour of the facilities in the
Environmental Isotope Laboratory.
***Who should attend
.. Researchers in any field new to stable isotope research/mass
spectrometry
.. Experienced users wishing current information on technology
.. Anyone interested in new investigative tools
Below is the tentative Workshop Agenda and intention/interest form. If
there are topics you wish to discuss, questions to submit for the
question and answer session or if you have a presentaion you can give,
please feel free to include this information on your return. This
announcement and attached tentative program can be viewed on the Web
at "http://www.science.uwaterloo.ca/~rkhmskrk/"
