FACULTY ADVERTISEMENT:
Assistant or Associate Professor / Low Temperature
Geochemistry. The Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) of
the University of Rhode Island (URI) invites applications for a
calender-year, tenure-track faculty position in low temperature
marine geochemistry with eight months of state support per year.
The faculty member will be expected to establish and carry out an
externally funded research program in low temperature marine
geochemistry. The faculty member will also be expected to teach
graduate courses in low temperature geochemistry (such as
marine biogeochemical cycles, isotope geochemistry, or chemical
paleoceanography), and to team-teach/mentor first-year graduate
students and undergraduates in GSO-related programs. For the
rank of assistant professor, the successful applicant must possess
(1) strong skills in low temperature marine geochemistry, (2) a PhD
in oceanography, geology, or a related field prior to hiring, (3) a
strong research record or the potential for developing an externally
funded research program in low temperature marine geochemistry,
(4) the ability to advise graduate students and to teach graduate
courses on low-temperature geochemistry and related topics, and
(5) research and teaching strengths that complement existing GSO
programs in paleoceanography, earth history, and organic, trace-
element and radionuclide geochemistry. For the rank of associate
professor, the candidate must meet the above criteria and also
demonstrate a strong record of independent funded research and
publication with international recognition.
Preference may be given to applicants that meet one or more of the
following criteria: (1) a research focus on light stable isotopes, (2) a
research emphasis on processes that leave an identifiable marine
geologic record, (3) a successful record of publications and/or
funded research, (4) teaching experience, (5) post-doctoral
research experience, and (6) potential for developing an ocean-
going research program. Review of applications will begin on July 9
, 1999, and will continue until the position is filled.
Please submit a curriculum vitae, the names and addresses of four
references, and a summary of research interests to Steven
D'Hondt, Search Committee Chair (Log #091260), University of
Rhode Island, PO Box G, Kingston, RI 02881.
The University of Rhode Island is an equal opportunity-affirmative
action employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its
