Hi all -
The following advertisement is for a senior research associate position
available at the Berkeley Center for Isotope Geochemistry. If you know of
anyone who doesn't normally receive ISOGEOCHEM messages and might be
interested, please pass this on to them.
Thanks.
Mark
Senior Research Associate
The Center for Isotope Geochemistry (CIG) at the Ernesto Orlando
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has an immediate opening for a
Postdoctoral Fellow. CIG is a joint research center between the University
of California at Berkeley and LBNL that conducts basic and applied research
on the use of isotopic variations in natural materials to further
understanding of geochemical processes related to environmental
restoration, geothermal energy, climate change, fossil energy, and
radioactive waste isolation. The stable isotope facilities include a VG
Isotech Prism Series II isotope ratio mass spectrometer with automated prep
systems for measuring the isotope ratios of carbonate minerals and oxygen
isotope ratios of waters. There is also a Micromass Isoprime mass
spectrometer designed for continuous flow techniques of measuring stable
isotope ratios. This machine is fitted with an automated trace gas
pre-concentration system and a GC-combustion system. In addition, there
are a variety of off-line sample preparation systems.
This position is for a senior research associate who will be
responsible for managing the stable isotope laboratories at CIG. The
successful candidate will be expected to perform a variety of stable
isotope analytical procedures to collect and process data in support of
research projects. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for
standard laboratory upkeep, including routine maintenance and cleaning of
the laboratory equipment and periodic calibration of the mass
spectrometers. Training of outside users (students, postdocs, and visiting
scientists) will also be required. Some field work may be necessary.
Extensive experience with stable isotope analytical techniques,
including operation and routine maintenance of an isotope ratio mass
spectrometer are required. Prior work with continuous flow techniques
(e.g., GC-C-IRMS) and/or gas chromatography are desirable. In addition,
proven ability to coordinate and process analyses of large numbers of
samples in a timely fashion with minimal supervision will be necessary.
