Jani:
I would not recommend trying to regenerate Mg perchlorate for
multiple uses in water traps. The chemical is not that expensive and
the amount used in traps found in various elemental analyzers, such
as the CE NA 1500 NC, is quite small. You can extend your supply of
Mg perchlorate somewhat by mixing it with a small proportion of
quartz turnings (not silica gel) before filling your water traps.
This has the added advantage of helping to prevent the perchlorate
grains from clumping as they absorb water, allowing one to clean out
the expended traps a little more easily.
Other recommendations for extending the life of your perchlorate
traps are to make sure your laboratory space is air conditioned and
to keep a very slight flow of helium passing through your system as
much as possible.
