Hydrogen isotopists,
I first came in contact with the zinc method when I worked at Scripps
Institution of Oceanography. I compared D/H results from the uranium
method versus the Zn method (published article: "Preparation of organic
and water hydrogen for stable isotope analysis: Effects due to reaction
vessels and zinc reagent", 1993, Analytical Chemistry, vol. 65, 798-792).
The lab used zinc from Indiana University with excellent results. Little
did I know then that eventually I would work at Indiana University where
the Zn is produced! Anyhow, here at IU we continue distributing special
Zn for D/H work at a modest price of ca 30 cents per analysis (which takes
about 100 mg of Zn, depending on the amount of water used). We also
provide free 10g samples.
Best regards, Arndt Schimmelmann
