The following announcement describes a Post-doctoral fellowship
opportunity in nuclear science. In view of Harry Thode's extensive
contributions to isotope geochemistry, it would seem appropriate that
well-qualified candidates in this field could apply, as well.

McMaster University
The H.G. Thode Postdoctoral Fellowships

In commemoration of the late Dr. Harry Thode's achievements as a nuclear
scientist and as a visionary university president, McMaster University is
pleased to invite applications for a total of two postdoctoral fellowships
in the general areas of Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Science or Nuclear
Engineering.

Dr. Thode was instrumental in acquiring for McMaster University an
on-campus low-power nuclear reactor. It has found application in a wide
range of research areas that include: isotope development and production
for protein labelling, medical imaging, molecular pharmacology and acid
rain studies; boron neutron capture therapy and radiation metrology;
anthropological geochronology; activation analysis; neutron radiography
for non-destructive testing; new materials research and material testing
for radiation damage studies. The research goals of the successful
candidates do not, however, have to explicitly or exclusively feature the
reactor; rather the areas identified are intended to be suggestive of the
general areas that will be affiliated with the Thode Fellowships.

The selection committee for these prestigious fellowships comprises the
Deans of Science, Engineering, Health Sciences, the Provost, and the
Vice-President (Research and International Affairs).

Each fellowship may be held for a term of two years. For 1998 the salary
will be $35,000 per year with benefits included. Successful candidates
may be offered the opportunity to teach at the undergraduate or graduate
level but this teaching will not exceed one course per term. In addition,
postdoctoral fellows may subsequently be considered for regular faculty
positions depending upon their suitability, the academic plans of the
relevant Faculty and budgetary constraints.

Applications should be send, by February 1, 1998, a full curriculum
vitae and letters from three referees to :

                Dr. Peter Sutherland
                Dean of Science
                McMaster University
                Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4K1
                Canada

McMaster University is committed to employment equity and encourages
application from all qualified candidates, including aboriginal peoples,
persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities and women.
