WANTED: POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW IN
COMBINED METAMORPHIC PETROLOGY AND GEOCHRONOLOGY

Supervised by David R.M. Pattison (U Calgary) and Larry Heaman (U
Alberta)

THE PROJECT: We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral fellow to
examine the petrogenesis and isotopic systematics (mainly U-Pb) of
accessory phases in the Ballachulish aureole, Scotland. The extensively
studied Ballachulish aureole provides an ideal natural setting to
examine the petrogenesis of accessory phases as a function of bulk rock
composition and metamorphic grade, and to examine their comparative
isotopic systematics in a single, well controlled setting. Several major
lithologies/bulk compositions have been affected by the contact
metamorphism (pelites, quartzites, siliceous dolomites, impure
limestones, metabasites), giving rise to a wide range of accessory
minerals useful for U-Pb dating, including zircon, monazite,
baddeleyite, rutile, titanite, apatite, allanite and xenotime. Most of
the lithologies have been studied in detail with respect to conventional
metamorphic petrogenesis. Although the initial focus will be on
accessory phases useful for U-Pb dating, it may be possible to expand
the project to include a comparative study of Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd and Ar-Ar
mineral systematics on the same samples as a function of metamorphic
grade within the aureole. For more information on the Ballachulish

phases)

TYPE OF WORK: field work at Ballachulish (mainly sample collecting),
microscopy, microprobe analysis, geochronology techniques, modelling.

REQUIREMENTS:   A PhD in metamorphic petrology. Experience with
geochronology would be a big asset.

SALARY: Can$ 27,000 - 29,000, plus benefits

TERM: 2-3 years, depending on how the project evolves
