A postdoctoral research fellowship for 2 years is available immediately
in the Dept. of Organic Chemistry at Umeå University, Sweden.
PROJECT:
The long-term goal of the project is to identify physiological responses
of plants to changing environmental conditions over long times. The
postdoc will use deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance, applied to
metabolites isolated from greenhouse-grownplants and tree ring
cellulose, to identify factors determining intramolecular deuterium
distributions and overall deuterium abundance (delta-D) in cellulose and
other plant metabolites (Schleucher et al., Plant Phys. 118 (1998),
1439; Plant, Cell, Environ. 22 (1999), 525). Isotope effects of
biochemical reactions influence intramolecular deuterium distributions,
and therefore delta-D, which is also influenced by climate via delta-D
of precipitation. Intramolecular deuterium distributions and delta-D
together carry plant-physiological and climate information. The goal of
the project is to extract this information.
METHODS
This project combines plant physiology (gas exchange, chlorophyll
fluorescence), organicchemistry, tree ring analysis and nuclear magnetic
resonance. The postdoc will work in the chemistry and botany departments
and will investigate correlations between gas exchange / chlorophyll
fluorescence parameters and intramolecular deuterium distributions in
metabolites of C3 plants. A second part of the will be the study of the
variation in intramolecular deuterium distributions of cellulose.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in botany or other relevant field. Ability to acquire techniques
from various areas, preferably experience with plant gas exchange /
chlorophyll fluorescence techniques, candidates with backgrounds in
stable isotope techniques, tree ring studies or organic chemistry will
also be considered.
