We are in the process of setting up a modular multi-purpose vacuum line to
prepare samples for stable isotope analysis. I've most commonly seen lines
in other labs mounted above knee-height benches (e.g. ~45 cm), but
occaisionally over counter-height benches (~90 cm). Since I'm going to
custom build from scratch a support rack and bench for this line, I would
like to tap your collective wisdom for suggestions about such things as the
optimum height to mount the main line (e.g. 140 cm off the floor?), optimum
height of bench or shelf beneath the line (e.g. 45 (knee), 60, 75 (table)
or 90 (counter) cm off the floor), optimum width of bench or shelf beneath
the line, optimum positioning of support rods, etc...  I'm of average
height, my collaborator is tall, and we'll likely have short students...

What do you like about the furnishings in your lab, what would you change
if you could?
