A Ph.D. position for 2 years is available immediately at the Institut für
Petrographie und Geochemie, University of Karlsruhe, Germany. Salary is
according to BAT IIa/2.

The position involves climate reconstruction at the end of the Cretaceous,
using trace elements and stable isotopes in foraminifera and sediments from
Maastrichtian profiles in North Africa, Madagascar, and Patagonia.

The abrupt mass extinction at the Cretaceous/Tertiary is generally
connected with the impact of a large asteroid. There is evidence, however,
for a gradual decline of many organisms that began in the Late Maastrichtan
and ended in Tertiary, as a result of changes in the climate, of sea level,
and ocean circulation. These changes are reflected in the trace element
composition and carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of foraminifers and sediment.

The applicant should hold a degree in Earth Sciences, have an interest and
the capability to address and elucidate geological problems. The applicant
should be willing to work with a team of international, inter-disciplinary
scientists. Experience in analytical chemistry, sediment- and
chemo-stratigraphy is of advantage.
