New research group in atmospheric sciences

A new research group will be founded at the Max-Planck-Institute für
Kernphysik in Heidelberg, Germany. The main goal of the group is the
investigation of chemical and dynamical processes in the stratosphere and
upper troposphere using isotopes as process tracers. We will combine
laboratory experiments, field experiments and modeling to study isotope
effects in key atmospheric reactions. Initially the focus will be on the
experimental side, i.e., the design and setup of laboratory measurements
and the development of new analytical methods. The equipment includes a
continuous-flow Delta+XL isotope ratio mass spectrometer including various
peripheral devices, a tunable diode laser system, and stratospheric
sampling devices.

Applicants for the postdoc position should have a firm knowledge about
atmospheric chemistry and physics, good technical skills and experience
with the pertinent methods, preferably in the area of stable isotope ratio
measurements. They should be willing to participate in the instruction of
Ph.D. students, and they will have the opportunity to follow their own
research interest within the area covered by the group.

Requirements for Ph.D. students are enthusiasm for atmospheric sciences,
perseverance, willingness to learn, inventiveness and a good sense of
humor; experience with isotope related research is not necessary, but a plus.

All applicants should have a strong interest in the chemistry and physics
of the atmosphere and the willingness to cooperate actively in a small,
committed research group.
