One of us (PLParker) did some carbides for a colleague at the Carnegie
Geophysical Lab years ago using a LECO induction furnace with lots of
oxygen. We don't have a LECO here at the moment but we could try a sealed
tube (quartz with CuO - high T, long time) if you have a bit to spare.
