That is a reasonable suggestion, but I'm not sure how realistic it is to
expect one teacher to look over 23 8th grade shoulders at once! In
conversation with our admin team we discussed the fact that incidents like
this are perhaps a natural consequence of "internet on-demand": all
workstations connected, with students and teachers turning to the internet
more and more often to answer their questions. This also means that middle
school students have access to the internet and computers during
unstructured and transition time (the incidents in question occurred as
students were being dismissed at the end of the day).

I do not question that staff should be aware of potential problems and
structure internet use and access so that students are encouraged toward
appropriate and constructive use (i.e. for school projects and not "surfing
for fun"). However I support the use of filters because I know that
"supervision" is not adequate to prevent students who willfully seek
inappropriate material.
