>NetWare Bows to Novell's Linux Push

Novell has been moving in this direction (i.e., away from NetWare as
its raison d'etre) for a long time. Way before Linux became their great
shining hope, they were positioning NDS as their flagship product.
Losing market share to MS in the server department, they figured they
could still beat them in directory services. It's become a commonplace
(at least among NetWare people) that Novell's technology is superior to
Microsoft's; it's their marketing that's lousy. Linux seems to have a
marketing life of its own and maybe Novell can catch that wave. It may
seem like marketing is irrelevant with a free product, but Linux is
turning out to be like stone soup: the stones are free but all the other
ingredients are gonna cost you.

From the standpoint of providing real alternatives to Microsoft, this
has got to be good news. From the narrower perspective of old-time
NetWare guys like me, it's not so great. But it isn't so bad either. I
believe them when they say NetWare isn't going away. While I don't
believe it will get the attention from development that it has in the
past, I do think they'll keep it limping along for quite a while. And,
at 58, I'm learning how to deal with limping along. I just hope
NetWare and I can keep limping along together until we both retire.
:-)
