[ Robert Craton of Taylor U <[log in to unmask]> describes
a computer competency approach to information literacy ...

Here at Taylor University our computer competency requirement
includes information skills. The competency requirement
has two components. First, each student is required to take
a two hour introductory course. Our Philosophy of
Information Technology describes the course as follows,
"Curriculum will be designed to enable students to develop
computer competency skills in their research, writing,
presentations, and projects. Students will be equipped to
make moral and ethical decisions pertaining to the use of
information technology resources."
The second component of the computer competency requirement
is linked to majors. The Philosophy of Information
Technology states, "Every department will incorporate
computer components enabling students to develop information
technology skills essential to their chosen discipline.
Discipline-specific software will be used to familiarize
students with products typically used in the field."
Both of the components above are designed to include
information and computer competency. One of the guiding
principles in our implementation of technology is "Students
must be provided with opportunities to access, retrieve,
evaluate, and appropriately use information technology
resources. This will enable students to meaningfully acquire
and manage information that will prepare them for life and
successful careers."
