Subject: Public Workstation Printing Changes in UVM Libraries
Memorandum
Date: August 14, 1998
To: All students, faculty, and staff
From: Rebecca Martin, Dean of Libraries
Effective August 24, 1998, the University of Vermont Libraries will
charge $0.07 per page to print from public workstations in the
Bailey/Howe and Dana Medical Libraries. With the growth of electronic
publishing and the World Wide Web, the demand for printing services
has increased dramatically. During the 1997-1998 fiscal year 364,000
pages were printed from terminals in the Bailey/Howe Library alone.
Our goal is to recover the cost of this increasingly expensive service
so that we can continue to provide the UVM community with a full range
of information resources and services. As always, we will continue to
assist users who prefer to use no cost post-processing options like
downloading to diskette and to email accounts.
As part of this change, we are replacing our aging dot matrix printers
with networked laser printers capable of reproducing both text and
graphics. We are extending printing services to all computer
workstations running the Windows operating system and eventually, as
we replace our older machines, printing will be available from all
public computers. This will improve the quality of printouts and make
printing more convenient.
Print jobs will be sent to printer stations located on the main floor
of the Bailey/Howe Library adjacent to the Reserve Desk, in the
Periodicals Department on the 2nd floor and on the ground floor in
both the Special Collections and the Government Documents Departments.
In the Dana Medical Library a printer station will be located near the
Circulation Desk. These print stations are self-serve and are not
configured to handle cash. Payment will be by debit card only, using
the same cards currently in use for photocopies. For details see the
attached fact sheet.

Printer FAQ
* How much does it cost to print?
The libraries charge $0.07 per page.
* What do I have to do to print?
Simply use the normal print commands for the program. If you're in
Netscape, click on the print option from the menu bar or hold the CTRL
P keys simultaneously. Your print job will be sent to the nearest
print station. You will also be prompted to name your print job and
to assign a password.
* Where do I go to get my printouts?
If you^Rre using a computer on the 1st floor of the Bailey/Howe
Library, you^Rll find your print jobs at the print station in front of
the Reserve Desk. If you^Rre on the second floor go to the print
station next to the Periodicals Desk. If you^Rre on the ground floor,
there are print stations in both the Special Collections and
Government Documents Departments. In the Dana Medical Library the
print station is the near the Circulation Desk.
* How will I know how much my print job costs?
When you select your print jog on the print station it will display
the number of pages and the total cost. At that time you can either
choose to pay for it or you can delete the job from the printer queue.
* How will I know which print job is mine?
When you sent the print job you were asked to associate a name with
the job and assign a password. The idea is to use something
recognizable like your last name or your zoo account name. Passwords
don^Rt have to be unique so choose something you^Rll remember and
stick with it. At the print station, jobs are list alphabetically by
the name you^Rve associated with the print job. Click on the job and
the system will prompt you for your password.
* What happens if I forget my password?
You will need to re-send the job. You can send as many jobs as
needed. The only time you are charged is when you actually print the
job.
* How long will my job stay in the print station queue?
Your print job will stay in the print station queue for two hours. If
you don^Rt claim your job in two hours it will be deleted from the
queue. At this point you will need to re-send the job. Again, there
is no charge to send the job. The cost is associated with printing.
>
* How do I pay for my printouts?
You can pay for printing with your CatCard or with one of the vendor
cards sold in the Libraries for use with photocopies. You cannot pay
for printouts with cash! The print stations are configured to work
with valid campus debit cards.
