Funny you should ask.
RSN (Real Soon Now).
1) One solution proposed was to upgrade. Another was to not push the Net
Search Button. It is a silly button. Nobody in CIT ever pushes it. I
advised to do as I do, and turn off that whole row of silly buttons:
clearly a case of do as I say and do.
2) The upgrade solution was proposed by Wesley Wright of Academic
Computing Services, a small semi-automonous arm of CIT. There are many
people in CIT, many of whom might be quick to add that Wesley Wright
alone does not set CIT policy.
3) This is a recently discovered problem, apparently existant only since
Sept. 12. Configuring and administering the lab is a big deal. It is
very non-trival to reconfigure 50 some odd macines and ensure their
stability under a new configuration mid semester -- not only from a
technology standpoint, but from an ergonomic standpoint as well. We are
almost sure to raise the ire of instructors and students who are
suddenly met today with an environment different from that encountered
yesterday.
I spoke with our lab network administer today. He plans to soon test a
NetScape 2.02 installation in 113-Q. He has justified concerns regarding
performance on 8 MB 33MHz machines, and no doubt even greater concerns
regarding the usability of NetScape 3.0 in the same environment. We have
no money to buy bigger, faster machines. We do what we can. We ask for
your patience.
