Secrets of the Mayan Underworld
In collaboration with the BBC, Sam Meacham (UVM, Class of 1990) explores
one of the mysteries of the ancient Mayan civilization and the role of
the “sacred wells” or cenotes, the enigmatic crystal clear pools of
water that dot the Yucatan Peninsula, in their culture. Since the
1980’s, over 100 cave systems and over 620 km of flooded cave
passageways have been explored and mapped in the area now known as the
Riviera Maya (south of Cancun). Sam Meacham, Director of the Quintana
Roo Aquifer System Research Center (CINDAQ), has spearheaded these
efforts in collaboration with hydrologists, geologists, archaeologists,
biologists, and other experts to unlock the many mysteries of the
Yucatan’s underground waterways. Come see this incredible BBC
documentary and talk with Sam Meacham about his research. The
photography alone will amaze you.
