I found this interesting, for two reasons:
1. We can see what's going on elsewhere in our UVM community.
2. Should we see if there might be connections for us to explore,
between our group and professor Jon Erickson's already-established
network in the Dominican Republic?
(Is there a project we can do for this community, coordinating our
efforts with the VT professionals?)

Dear colleagues,
Do you have any iMac or eMac all-in-one Macintosh computers sitting around
that are destined for surplus? Laptops of any make that are acting as
paperweights? If so, UVM's efforts in the Dominican Republic could use
them.
Jon Erickson, a faculty member at the Rubenstein School of Environment and
Natural Resources, teaches a travel-study course that participates with
the Batey Libertad Coalition in HIV/AIDS education and community
development. One of their many projects in the area has been to build a
school, complete with computer lab. With physical space, power
availability, language, software maintenance/usability, and shipping all
factors to consider, we decided that all-in-one Macs running a Spanish
version of OS 9 (in compliance with Apple's licensing and Export Law
Assurances) was the best way to go.
The lab has a need for additional machines, so if you have or know someone
who has a spare all-in-one Macintosh (where the computer and monitor are
not separate components) and would like to donate it, please contact me

The project has also provided donated laptops to college students of Batey
Libertad who are attending Dominican universities through sponsorships
from Education Across Borders (http://www.educationacrossborders.org/).
