Ten years back I tried the same, but I found it was not possible to recycle 
the
used Zn shot for further use for the D/H analysis. Perhaps it has to do with 
the
surface of the Zn, as the reaction takes place on the surface of the Zn 
grains.
If you see the surface of the Zn grains before the reaction it is like a 
fine sponge
I have tried to show the clean surface  with the help of SEM photographs

But after the reaction the recycled Zn surface is smooth all the pours are 
blocked
and inspite of cleaning with nitric acid it remains like a solid block. It 
looks like we
have to live with it.

Dear comrades

We have accumulated a lot used Zinc shot in our lab in deuterium isotope
analyses.  I wonder if it's possible to recycle the used Zn shot for further
use in D/H measurement. I tried washing with HNO3 to remove the oxides and
vacuum-drying, but  it didn't work.

Your suggestions, method of treatment or references are all welcome.
