MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND
OCEAN SCIENCES CENTRE
FACULTY POSITIONS IN MARINE SCIENCE
The Ocean Sciences Centre (OSC) of Memorial University is
building on its strengths in
cold-water marine biology and aquaculture, and invites applications
for two tenure-track faculty
positions. The successful candidates will possess a Ph.D. and post-
doctoral or equivalent
experience.
Position 1: Marine Ecology or Marine Biology. This appointment will
be made at the
appropriate academic rank (assistant, associate or full professor).
The successful
candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellence in undergraduate
and graduate
teaching, and to possess a strong research record. While not
essential, application of
aspects of the candidate’s research to general questions in
aquaculture will be an asset.
Position 2: Marine Aquaculture. This appointment will be at the
assistant or associate
professor level. The successful candidate will develop a basic
research program with
applications to marine aquaculture, and be expected to take a leading
role in the
research activities of the OSC’s Aquaculture Research and Development
Facility
(ARDF). Other responsibilities will include teaching in the M.Sc.
aquaculture program,
and liaising with government agencies and the developing aquaculture
industry (finfish
and bivalve).
The OSC (http://www.osc.mun.ca/), which is located 10 km north of
the university’s main
campus in St. John’s, has a primary research focus on cold-ocean
processes and subarctic and
arctic organisms. The OSC has excellent laboratory, seawater and
field services and is
recognized internationally for the quality and productivity of its
cold-ocean research programs
in marine biology and ecology, aquaculture, marine animal physiology
and biochemistry,
chemical, biological and fisheries oceanography. The mandate of the
OSC is to conduct and
promote research into the marine environment, primarily through the
teaching and supervision
of graduate students (Ph.D. and M.Sc.) and post-doctoral fellows. At
present, the OSC has a
core faculty of 12 and a staff of 30. In addition, 60 graduate
students and 8 Post-doctoral
fellows and Research Associates are presently conducting research at
the OSC.
