Dear Paul,

I did experience such problem with HCl acidification techniques in
EA-carbon analyses. This is due to corrosion of column filling
Ag-cobaltous-cobaltic oxide which gets consumed much faster than
expected. To get around this problem firstly you make sure that all the
samples treated with HCl should be dried thoroughly with distilled water
to get rid of all the HCl fumes. Secondly you can try using silver wool
which can take care of HCl fumes.
