Position Summary:

Under faculty supervision, the incumbent provides analytical and technical
support for the Stable Isotope Laboratory. Specific duties include:
operating, maintaining, and trouble-shooting laboratory equipment including
compound specific stable isotope mass spectrometers, purge and trap
systems, gas chromatographs, high vacuum extraction lines and sample
preparation systems; maintaining and upgrading laboratory manuals;
preparing and analyzing samples using the above equipment; performing
routine data analysis and manipulation using databases, spreadsheets and
basic statistical tools; helping supervisor prepare analytical reports and
applications; ordering supplies and parts for the equipment; maintaining
lab records and statistics, and files of relevant technical literature;
recording and organizing incoming samples, sample status, shipment
information and paperwork including grants and contracts; training and
assisting students, staff and non-departmental users in the use of the
available techniques and equipment; and serving as laboratory contact for
persons requesting information about the laboratory and its analytical
services, and about sample shipments.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: B.Sc. or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:  At least 2 years' related, practical hands-on experience
gained in a similar laboratory setting, preferably in a University
environment. Experience with operation of compound specific stable isotope
mass spectrometers or equivalent.
Skills: Proficiency with relevant programs including MS Word, Windows,
Excel, email and web, PowerPoint. Experience working with spreadsheets and
databases.
Other: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to
interact effectively with students, staff, and researchers with and outside
the University. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Shows
good judgement and initiative.
