Dear Cap,
Thanks very much for the very sad news. By coincidence I had just spent
the afternoon typing a manuscript on the conservation of African forest
where I had occasion to refer to his classic 1955 paper and also to his
recent letter to Science. I had been thinking of him warmly, marvelling
that a man should have two citable papers published almost 50 years
apart, remembering his ready wit and the graceful way in which he
responded to Nick Shackleton's revision of his paleotemperature
estimates. It was a great shock to turn to my e-mail and find that he
was no longer with us.
Sincerely,
Dan Livingston
