Dear All

I am hoping to conduct some dispersed organic analyses (DOC) on some
continental sediments I recently collected on a fieldtrip in Spain. I
have not myself conducted DOC analyses before and would be grateful if
anyone could send me a recipe for the sample preparation or point out a
recent publication with a detailed recipe in.

International Workshop on the Isotope Effects in Evaporation: Revisiting
the Craig-Gordon Model Four Decades after its Formulation

to be held on 3-5 May 2006 at

The aim of the Workshop is to re-examine the current knowledge for the
prediction and estimation of the isotope fractionations occurring during
phase changes of water in natural environments and laboratory
with special emphasis on the Craig-Gordon evaporation model.

The Workshop will include all topics related to the isotopic effects in
water evaporation and ice sublimation, vapour transport in the
vapour condensation, evapo-transpiration from plants and soils, as well
experimental studies on exchange and isotope fractionations between ice,
liquid water and vapour, isotopic balance of lakes, isotopic records
associated with the evaporation-condensation cycle of water and their
relationships with the environmental conditions, etc. Also elements
than hydrogen and oxygen, will be considered if they produce isotopic
effects related to evaporation or other phase changes of water.

The Workshop will include selected oral presentations and poster
presentations, whose extended abstracts should be submitted by January
2006. The selection will be made by the scientific committee of the
Workshop. A web site will be established soon, where detailed
on the meeting will be given.

The Craig-Gordon evaporation model was formulated four decades ago and
been, and still is, widely applied in isotope hydrology and
The model started to be elaborated by Prof. Harmon Craig during his
sabbatical leave at the Laboratory for Nuclear Geology of the University
Pisa, directed by Prof. Ezio Tongiorgi. The model was included in a long
paper on stable isotope variations in the ocean and the marine
co-authored by Louis I. Gordon. The paper was presented at the Workshop
Stable Isotopes in Oceanographic Studies and Paleotemperatures held in
Spoleto, Italy, in July 1965, and published in the proceedings of the
meeting (Editor: E. Tongiorgi). In spite of the limited circulation of
these proceedings, the Craig-Gordon paper became rapidly a classic which
has made the history of isotope geochemistry,

Thus, the Workshop will also provide the opportunity to commemorate
Craig as prominent scientist whose research and ideas greatly
to the advancement of the stable isotope geochemistry of light elements.
Together with him, we would like to remind the work of Ezio Tongiorgi,
founder and promoter of isotope geology in Italy.
