We have seen Latitudes exhibiting similar problems. Many models of Latitude
and Inspiron share the same motherboard, so it's not surprising that the
same problems would show up in both.
The first test is to try using another AC Adapter. If your Inspiron runs OK
with that adapter and without the battery, the problem is in the original
adapter. In these cases, the adapter can charge the battery but not run the
laptop.
If the problem occurs with the other AC Adapter, then the problem is with
the motherboard in the laptop. In this case, the path in the power
circuitry where current goes directly from the DC input to the motherboard
is broken, but the path to the battery is not; the laptop is essentially
running constantly off battery power, which is constantly being replenished
by the AC Adapter.
In either case, we can provide service, in or out of warranty. We carry AC
Adapters in stock for C- and D-Series Latitudes, and many Inspiron models
take the same between kind. In cases where they are different, we can order
the correct kind.
