We have spiritual/religious texts in our collection, mostly related to
pastoral care or death and dying - many people and cultures are
profoundly religious and this can be a major point of patient-caregiver
interaction and satisfaction. We also have some business/mgmt type
books - after all, a hospital is a business and they do have management.
I do not see this as an unreasonable request, although I would say not
to purchase them if you don't see the need or if you feel forced into
it. You said yourself that your collection development policy was
rather open-ended; also, I find it interesting that you term this
situation as feeling "icky". Is it the religious aspect that unnerves
you or the fact that you are feeling pushed into doing this?
Either way, it will be your final decision.
Good luck.
Thank you,
Mollie

Subject: Advice on recommended book purchase
It has been suggested to me that the library purchase two books. They
are
both out of print, but available inexpensively through Amazon.com. Both
are
short collections of inspirational essays on the role of religious faith
in
business and management (they are explicitly Christian). We are not a
religiously-affiliated hospital. While I do have some leadership /
management books, these are not the type of resource I would normally
purchase for our collection and do not fit my admittedly rather
open-ended
collection development policy. But they were written by a former leader
of
a large corporation, with whom the hospital has a significant business
relationship.
This just feels icky. But since they're cheap, I'm thinking the wisest
if
not the best thing to do is just buy them and put them on the shelf, in
spite of my misgivings about the appropriateness of the books and the
request. There are much bigger battles to fight than this one, but I'm
just
not happy about it...thoughts? words of wisdom?
