Reference/Education Services Librarian
Penn State College of Medicine invites applications for the newly-created
position of Reference and Education Services Librarian for the George T.
Harrell Library. Under new academic and administrative direction, the
Library is assuming an increasingly prominent role in the stewardship of
enterprise information resources for the Penn State College of Medicine and
the Penn State Geisinger Health System. Hershey Medical Center, located in a
pleasant community 12 miles from Harrisburg, is the site of the Penn State
College of Medicine and is south central Pennsylvania's premier health care
facility. The Penn State Geisinger Health System offers the largest rural
health plan in the country, spanning 40 counties in northern and central
Pennsylvania. Penn State's tight integration of college and health system
programs, including library services, is unique among academic health
systems and serves as a model for other academic enterprises. As the only
academic health center library in south central Pennsylvania, the Harrell
Library serves Penn State's biomedical user community and the larger
regional community. The newly renovated Harrell Library spans more than
46,000 square feet, houses a print collection of more than 1,500 current
journal titles and 26,000 monographs, and offers a growing array of
electronic resources, including a new computer and audiovisual laboratory.
Responsibilities: The reference/education services librarian works as a
member of the academic information team providing reference and liaison
services in an innovative and technically sophisticated network, using
locally loaded and WEB Resources. Special emphasis is placed on contributing
to the development and selection of electronic tools within the reference
and educational environment. Required: ALA-accredited MLS; minimum of 2
years biomedical reference experience; well-developed microcomputer and
online searching skills, including Internet resources/tools. Must be
team-oriented, flexible, and able to work both independently and
collaboratively in a complex, changing environment. Preferred: commitment to
the public services and the IAIMS concept; familiarity with digital
technologies and their roles in the library. Subject background in the
health or life sciences. Salary: Commensurate with experieince. Penn State
