MedStar Washington Hospital Center has had several programs where we partnered with local area nursing schools. During the students' last year(s), they would work at the hospital while taking classes, and often had classes or instructional units at the hospital. I think sometimes the students needed to commit to work for the hospital for a certain number of years (one to three, I think) in exchange for free or reduced tuition at the nursing school.
None of those programs involved sponsoring LPN certification or supporting students getting their LPN midway through the process. My sense is that, first of all, the end game for the hospital is more RNs. My administration is trying to move away from staffing with LPNs, so they neither need nor want to create and support additional positions for LPNs. Secondly, I think the feeling is that RN programs are immensely time-consuming anyway, so they don't want to encourage the students to spend time and effort on a detour like LPN certification which doesn't directly and immediately move the student towards her graduation as an RN.
My institution does, however, support tuition reimbursement for currently-employed LPNs and PCTs (patient care technicians) working towards an RN degree.

Subject: ? LPN-to-RN programs
Hi,
One of our nurses asked last week if there are any existing programs in which students who are studying to be RNs sit for LPN boards while they are in the middle of their programs. The goal would be for new, not-yet-any-kind-of-nurse ADN/BSN students to practice as LPNs in hospitals while they are still studying to be RNs - as a method of encouraging those nurses to continue working in the hospital after they do pass RN boards.
I don't see any programs like this, in which a newbie becomes an LPN while in the midst of an RN program. Is anyone aware of any such programs or -- even better - articles written about them?
Many thanks,
