TITLE: Liaison and Outreach Librarian (Faculty Librarian)
LOCATION: Services Division
SALARY: $40,000 minimum
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL), University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) seeks knowledgeable, energetic, and creative librarians to support the teaching and outreach missions of the Library. These non-tenure track faculty positions work with a team of seven faculty librarians within the Services Division. May 2006 library school graduates are welcome to apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The faculty librarian develops and provides onsite and web-based instruction for faculty, staff and students of UMB; works collaboratively with the campus community; provides community-based health information outreach, including support of the Maryland Go Local web site, which links Marylanders to health-related services and programs. The faculty librarian evaluates print and online resources within a subject specialty to create a collection of resources to support campus initiatives. Each faculty librarian also evaluates, selects, and organizes information from the web to create high quality web collections; and participates in designing innovative programs and services.
The faculty librarian is expected to collaborate on divisional projects, serve on library-wide committees, and be professionally active in the field of medical librarianship.
Some evening and weekend hours required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLS from ALA-accredited school; strongly service oriented; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred: Reference experience in an academic or health sciences library; experience searching databases such as Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science; outreach experience; experience in evaluating and using online resources; knowledge of library technology and Microsoft applications.

ENVIRONMENT:
UMB is located in downtown Baltimore, blocks from Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Raven's Stadium, and the Inner Harbor, a recreational waterfront destination. Forty-five miles north of Washington DC, Baltimore City and the surrounding metropolitan area are noted for high quality-of-life indicators offering historic parks, great neighborhoods, and world famous art collections, museums, theaters, and symphony orchestras. The city has easy access to public transportation systems, superior health care systems, and renowned university and educational resources.
The HS/HSL is the second largest medical school library on the East Coast, providing access to 372,794 bound volumes, 2800 unique electronic and print periodicals, and 52 databases. Sixty-five FTEs and 25 faculty librarians staff the library. Our attractive facility, which opened in 1998, provides over 900 seats, 40 group study rooms, 130 individual study-carrels, 60 public-access computers, wireless Internet access, 3 computer classrooms, and a satellite conferencing center. The 190,000 square foot building also houses the Tower Café, the HS/HSL coffee lounge.
The Library supports the 5,600 students, 2,045 faculty and staff members on UMB's 60-acre research and technology complex of 58 buildings including the University of Maryland Medical Center. UMB's seven professional and graduate schools include a dental school, graduate school, and schools of law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work.
