Several lucky librarians are about to get the chance-of-a-lifetime

REFERENCE LIBRARIAN

The Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences is seeking an energetic,
flexible member of the Information and Instructional Services (IIS)
unit.  Responsibilities include  reference service, user education,
online searching, outreach/marketing activities, classroom instruction
with the library's education program, and participation on library and
university committees. Required:  ALA accredited MLS or equivalent,
excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability
to interact well with library users and staff.  Preferred: two or more
years experience in an academic health sciences library, MEDLINE
searching experience, strong public service orientation, demonstrated
skill in teaching educational programs for adult users.  This is a non
tenure-track faculty position with rank dependent on the successful
candidate's qualifications and experience, reporting to the Assistant
Director for IIS. Salary range: $31,000-$40,000.  Excellent fringe

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR PUBLIC SERVICES

The Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences at the University of
Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking applications from innovative and
experienced librarians interested in taking a leadership role in a
dynamic, team-oriented organization.  The Associate Director for Public
Services (ADPS) reports to the Director, and is responsible for the
effective delivery of library services in the areas of reference,
circulation, stack management, document delivery, reserves and customer
education.  The Public Services staff includes 6 faculty librarians, 21
paraprofessionals and 10-12 students.   The Assistant Director for
Access and Document Delivery Services and the Assistant Director for
Information and Instructional Services report to the ADPS.

The Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences, established in 1945, is
the largest biomedical library in Alabama and one of the leading such
libraries in the South.  It  supports UAB's 6 health sciences schools
and the UAB health system, and is expanding its programs in
evidence-based medicine, consumer and patient health, library
instruction and use of technology for effective practice.  The ADPS is a
member of the Library's senior management group, participates in
strategic planning, facilitates teamwork throughout all library
departments, creates and implements programs, guides staff in problem
solving and professional development and oversees the marketing of
library services.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is one of the leading academic
medical centers in the nation, with schools of Medicine, Dentistry,
Public Health, Nursing, Health Related Professions, and Optometry.
UAB's School of Medicine is currently ranked 16th in NIH funding.

Birmingham, a 128-year-old city at the foot of the Appalachian
Mountains, is growing into one of the New South's hottest metro areas;
home to medical research, banking, automotive, music, technology, art,
engineering and higher education; with its wonderful climate, rolling
hills, beautiful lakes, downtown lofts,  and nationally ranked
restaurants it offers beautiful surroundings in which to live and work.



QUALIFICATIONS:  Required:  An information sciences/library sciences
degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent; a minimum of
5 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in a health
sciences setting.  The successful candidate will also have demonstrated
effective leadership in the health sciences library field; knowledge of
trends in knowledge-based information and Web services; automated
library functions and systems; superior interpersonal and communications
skills; and demonstrated capabilities in problem solving, management and
process improvement.  Membership in the Academy of Health Information
Professionals is preferred. 

SALARY:  $50,000 minimum, based on qualifications and experience. This
is a non-tenure earning faculty position with rank dependent on the
