To all the Medlibbers who hope that JC Library visitation becomes a part
of the accreditation process:
I was thrilled to read of Linda's experience, and I wonder if there are
any other "sightings". We had a similar experience in November, with the
M.D. stopping by, asking about our point-of-care services (DynaMed and
Nursing Reference Center), and commenting that he could tell by talking
to the nurses and medical staff that they valued access to good medical
information. The surveyors even went so far as to include comments about
the library in their final review!!
You can bet that we will include this experience with others when we go
through budget hearings. Hearing Linda's story will add some strength to
our argument that library presence is an emerging factor in
accreditation. We could all use additional stories. I would be glad to
compile and disseminate to the MedLib list!
Enjoy the weekend!

Subject: Joint Commission is reviewing my hospital this week and they
actually came into the library for about 20 minutes
The main question was what databases the library provided. Of course,
they asked if the library subscribed to Up-To-Date. They wanted to see
our online intranet site. They also wanted to specifically see our CME
section. In our hospital we subscribe to CMELectures and NCME so that is
listed on our site. Our library also lists other free internet CME sites
and how to get to them. They went over most of what was on our intranet
library site with additional interest in our online journals. They
wanted to know if the physicians in the outside offices had access to
our site and if they did how did they make the connection. We have an
audio visual room that was erected through NLM grants and physician
contributions and they were interested in how we used this room. Our
quality person also told them how the library assists them with
literature searches in regards to quality issues, sentinel events, etc.
This is the first time I have seen reviewers from the Joint Commission
come to our library in many years.
Maybe there is change in the air.
