I was wondering when the issue of copyright would come up! As a fairly
new librarian, I have just been watching the list. But I do not think
that most people are suggesting that ILL's not be allowed. However,
there does seem to be some abuse by a few people on an almost daily
basis. I take care of ILL for my library and have ran across very few
items that I cannot get via docline. I also understand that some people
might be working with limited budgets. Is there something wrong with
telling the patron, "I cannot get this from any of our resources for
free but if you want to pay a fee, I can get it from NLM" (for example).

As some recently taking many library classes, in almost all the classes
we talk about copyright. Sharing freely is fine but make sure that
falls within the copyright guidelines. I know for me that means no
ILL's of anything electronic (way the contract is written).

Tom's comment is well taken. In addition, an issue that has been
overlooked is one of licensure and/or copyright, for example, the
Cochrane Library (and for Wiley titles in general), where the template
license agreement does not permit electronic or other ILLs.

Has Medlib changed its policy on using the listserv for ILL requests?
In the past the policy was that we could only do that when
we've exhausted all other possibilities; Docline, OCLC, or whatever.
Lately there seems to be ever-increasing ILL traffic on the list? If
it's now open season to do ILLs I'd like to know so we can avail
ourselves of this service.

Thanks.

Tom
