                           VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
 
 
Head of Information Services
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:  Manage and provide specialized information
services to support the programs and research of the New York
Academy of Medicine -- a center for the study of urban health issues.
 
Plan, implement and monitor the delivery of reference, online
searching and other information services to Fellows and staff
of the Academy, members of the general public, as well as
affiliated schools, libraries and community-based organizations.
 
Supervise a professional staff of five FTE information specialists.
Instruct individuals and groups in the use of the library and in
the retrieval of medical information from print and electronic sources.
Design and implement an ongoing training program for the department
staff.  Work actively with the Information Systems Department to apply
technology to the delivery of services.  Conduct analyses of the
quality of services provided.  Plan for the development of services
based on continuous assessment of the needs of users.  Serve as
liaison to Academy committees and programs, providing in-depth research
assistance as needed.  Participate in the development and writing of
grant proposals.
 
POSITION AVAILABLE:  August 1, 1994
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
REQUIRED:  MLS from an ALA-accredited program.  Five years of professional
experience as a health sciences reference librarian.  Demonstrated
supervisory and group training experience.  Active involvement in
professional organizations.  Strong interest in health care issues.
Knowledge of the concepts of health policy research, epidemiology and
public health. Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Extensive
experience with library technologies including the use of the Internet.
 
PREFERRED:  Experience as an ELHILL MEDLARS searcher.  Second master's
degree in a relevant subject area.
 
SALARY:  Minimum of $40,000 with excellent benefits.
