I have to agree with Susan Fowler. This is the kind of publicity we
can't afford if we are going to stay professionally alive in the 21st
century. It drives some current library users away and discourages
potential users. I'd be willing to bet that more people saw or talked
about that article than visited their local public library that day.
A person who purposely steals thousands of dollars of material is one
thing; a $31 video is another. This incident cost them more than the
price of the video.
Have you ever been introduced to someone who, on hearing you are a
librarian, got a strange look of consternation on their face? One
similar to what you would have seen if you had said "I'm an auditor for
the IRS.? Without even asking, I know to make this simple reassuring
comment:
"You know, the only people who/ never/ have overdue books and who /never
/forget to return something are people who don't use libraries at all.
I'm glad that you do."
