Dorothy Fleisher is absolutely correct. In retrospect, I should have
read the whole article more carefully befor broadcastin it to all. (the
broadcasting is a "no-no" since it might cause copyright problems,
etc.). The Dallas news article is not worth publicising. It cannot do
us librarians any good, since it another "testimonial" by librarians and
MLA 's Carla Funk, and self-praising is suspect from the word "go".
(There is an old Hebrew proverb, by Hillel, that says "let others
praise you, BUT not you own mouth", and cinically we used to change one
word in the sentence so it read "let others phraise you, and IF not -
your mouth"). The only non-librarian statement is by a Dr. Tandy, and
the qoute is "Probably, they have been the most significant people in my
career". My advice to you all: trash this article - but befor you do,
take a look at the average salaries for Medical Librarians and Special
Librarians. And I'd better quit before I get flamed for being
"negative" and "frightening" and "discouraging all of you colleagues out
there.
By the way, and professional young Librarian just left her employ at one
of our ENH medical libraries, and position might not get filled. It is
a community Hospital, not a "teaching hospital". I am NOT asking for
"what you can do to change it" advise - PLEASE DO NOT OFFER it - I know
what I "should" and can do, and I have 18 years of experience in the
decision making mechanism of this organization. Here goes my poor head
again, hitting the brick wall.

Subject: Re: dallasnews.com article On Physicians and Librarians -
Although it is gratifying to see libraries and librarians mentioned in a
positive light, did anyone notice that the gentleman mentioned most
prominently was not a librarian, but a retired minister, with no MLS or
librarian training; "totally self-taught"?
