As an additional point, use descriptive subjects and be
selective in what you take your time to read. This is the only
way I can wade through the many newsgroups I subscribe to.
Good subject lines increase your chance of successful replies.
We regularly teach Internet classes at UVa and I make this point
during all classes. I also stress the importance of not
getting obsessed with trying to read everything that's posted.
There's simply not enough time in the day. I think with any
large newsgroup there's going to be a certain amount of
extraneous stuff that doesn't belong. I realize that this
problem is agravated for users receiving this group via a
listserve mailing list and not Usenet, buts there's always the
option of using the delete key.
