I wondered about "the big eye" too.  If you click on "the eye"
there is a link to an explanation page, which says, in part:

"The graphic appearing to the right of the masthead is taken
from a collection of historical medical illustrations
distributed by the Visual Language Library on their CD-ROM Art
of Anatomy: 1513-1879. Different images will appear here from
time to time in order to freshen the site and represent the full
range of health sciences specialties served by MLA members."
