                  POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
                    (Search Re-Opened)
 
TITLE:  Systems Librarian, Automation Services Department
 
DESCRIPTION:  Provide leadership in the design, coordination and
implementation of automated systems.  Designs and manages systems
for full-text, SGML, numeric, and image databases.  Coordinates
development of library's access to Internet resources, including
design and management of gopher and WWW pages.  Assists in planning
and development of library's NOTIS integrated library system.
Develops programs, scripts, and macros for users as appropriate.
Evaluates and recommends software for purchase.  Plans and presents
staff training on all aspects of automation, particularly
microcomputer-based systems.  Reports to the Head of Automation
Services in a department with 7 FTE.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA accredited MLS or combination of a masters
degree in a computer-related discipline and relevant experience
required.  The following are preferred: excellent oral and written
communication skills; good organizational and project management
skills; demonstrated knowledge of DOS, Windows, Unix, and SGML;
experience with a variety of microcomputer application software and
languages, an integrated library system, and Open Text or similar
full-text management system; familiarity with MARC format and OCLC;
excellent training skills; positive interpersonal relations with
ability to work well independently and in groups; record of
achievement in library automation; strong service orientation;
initiative and creativity; ability to deliver work on deadline;
strong analytical skills; sensitivity to the concerns of a research
library and its users; flexibility and the ability to accept and
manage change; interest in professional activities; ability to meet
requirements for faculty advancement, including professional
service and publication.  Experience working in a culturally
diverse environment highly preferred.
 
ENVIRONMENT:  Virginia Commonwealth University is a publicly-supported
urban, research university in Richmond, Virginia.  It
serves 21,000 students with 2,000 full-time faculty on both the
academic campus and at the Medical College of Virginia.  The
University awards doctoral degrees in 20 fields and has recently
established a School of Engineering.  VCU is a member of the
Association for Southeast Research Libraries, the Center for
Research Libraries, and the National Network of Libraries of
Medicine.  The library has over 1.1 million volumes, 10,000
serials, and a materials budget in the current fiscal year of $4.5
million.  The library is highly automated, with 250 nodes in a
combined Banyan and Novell environment, all NOTIS modules
operational with centralized access to 20 databases in MDAS and
InfoShare, hundreds of CD and other electronic resources, a growing
presence on the Internet (http://exlibris.uls.vcu.edu/uls.html),
and active leadership in the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA).
 
SALARY:  $28,000 minimum.  Benefits include 24 days leave, choice
of health plans (including HMOs and dental plans), choice of
retirement and annuity plans (including TIAA/CREF); remuneration
for University coursework; and paid life insurance.
