If the question is about a specific specialty, it may be helpful to contact that specialty society. We get asked the question about ob/gyn - population ratio frequently, and altho we do not recommend a specific ratio, we know what the numbers are and what the general recommendations of others are for our specialty.

there are some good links from http://www.hrsa.dhhs.gov/ for both specialists, primary care providers
also, the graduate medical education national advisory committee report gives ratios of physicians to population for specialities... a us public health services report...
