The UC Davis General Library seeks an innovative and proactive Biological and Agricultural Sciences Librarian to work closely with faculty and students in a highly interdisciplinary scientific research community.
Scope: The Biological and Agricultural Sciences Reference Department is located in the Peter J. Shields Library and is one of five science departments or libraries in the UC Davis General Library including the Carlson Health Sciences Library, the Blaisdell Medical Library, the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library, and the Agricultural and Resource Economics Library. Staffing for the Biological and Agriculture Sciences Reference Department consists of 5.0 FTE librarians, 3.2 administrative and staff assistants. The position reports to the Head of the department.
Responsibilities: The Biological and Agricultural Sciences Librarian provides outreach services to create awareness of library resources and support the information needs of a highly interdisciplinary research community with an emphasis on serving a growing community of molecular biologists, and genomic and proteomic researchers.
Collection development duties consist of working collaboratively with librarians, faculty and students to develop and coordinate collections and services through needs assessment and the development, implementation and evaluation of collections, tools and services. This position is primarily responsible for the Biological and Agricultural Sciences selection areas of molecular and cellular biology, genetics and genomics, biochemistry, physiology, neurobiology, biotechnology, biophysics, biostatistics and computational biology.
The Biological and Agricultural Sciences Librarian: cultivates and maintains strong working relationships with faculty and graduate students; maintains an understanding of relevant research and teaching programs within the sections and departments that this position supports, including pertinent genetics research institutes such as the new Genome Center and the Rowe Program in Molecular Medicine and Human Genetics; responds to trends and creates new initiatives in science reference practices, using information technologies, and exploring new models of scholarly communication; develops and delivers instructional services, including curriculum-based education programs; participates in electronic delivery of information to researchers and develops information services and products, including design of web pages and instructional guides; shares in provision of reference desk and consultation services; serves as library departmental, campus or University of California liaison for subject specialty databases or electronic resources; and participates in a range of projects and activities in collaboration with other University of California campus libraries. The schedule for this position may include occasional evening and weekend assignments.
Required Qualifications: Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Strong background in the sciences with evidence of active interest in biological or agricultural sciences, preferably with academic coursework in the biological sciences. Demonstrated outreach experience in developing working partnerships with clientele and communities, preferably in an academic environment. Ability to develop and deliver discipline-related instructional sessions for faculty and students to support information retrieval and management. Strong background in the use of information technology tools, such as web development tools, information management tools and online databases, and a passion for implementing emerging technologies to improve information services. Strong commitment to public service. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues, students, faculty and staff in a rapidly changing, complex, multicultural environment. Self-motivated with the flexibility to adapt to change. Ability to handle several projects and responsibilities simultaneously. Superior oral and written communications skills and interpersonal skills. Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
Desirable Qualifications: Degree in biological, biomedical or agricultural sciences. Experience in providing public services in a biological, biomedical, or agricultural sciences academic library or specialized biosciences research library environment. Demonstrated understanding of bioscientist information needs and the application of information technology in serving this population. Project management skills. Experience with or knowledge of molecular biology resources, databases and data collections. Experience with or knowledge of NCBI or NLM molecular biology resources. Experience with bibliographic management software. Experienced database search skills, particularly with PubMed, ISI, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts and SilverPlatter interfaces.

Benefits: Librarians are academic appointees. They earn 24 days of vacation and 12 days of sick leave per annum. The University has an excellent retirement system that is coordinated with Social Security. Several health, dental, and vision plans are currently provided by the University.
