Joy's point about new and greater professional staff roles is very true.

Perhaps an argument to help support (or redefine) the LTA position is that your professional staff time is better spent doing these things than taking on the clerical and paraprofessional tasks that still need to be done.

...More professional skills are needed now than before and additional professional responsibilities have developed(liaison with departments, more training of other health care professionals, assistance with Endnote, etc. etc.).
